The 1925 bungalow of Joseph Blanchard, a local, African American, fisherman and his wife Minnie, a mail-order bride from New Orleans, is now The Blanchard House Museum of African American History and Culture of Charlotte County. The museum’s main gallery exhibits tell about Punta Gorda’s early African American pioneers, the community of Trabue Woods, work life and leisure time in the community before desegregation.
The John H. Allen Gallery holds our seasonal, changing exhibits. The current exhibit is, The Jim Crow Era: Punta Gorda, Florida 1885 - 1965. The Blanchard House Museum is open from late September to late May. Its hours of operation are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. We are located at 406 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Punta Gorda, Florida and our phone number is (941) 575-7518.
When Joseph and Minnie Blanchard built their little house life was simpler and time moved more slowly. On warm, sub-tropical days they would sit on their spacious, front porch and wave to friends and neighbors as they passed by.
Come visit The Blanchard House Museum. Bring a book or a friend or two and come sit a spell on the porch. Relax and enjoy the simple, southern charm of slowly passing the time.
There are places where experiences are intertwined with lifelong memories and people grow closer discovering new friendships. The Blanchard House Museum is just such a place.
